Washington Nationals News & Information
The Washington Nationals have been a major league baseball team in the National League since they relocated to Washington DC in 2004. Before that time, they were the Montreal Expos and had been slated to be shut down by the MLB, along with the Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Washington Nationals of Washington, DC can be found playing regular season games at Nationals Park; previously they had played from RFK Stadium for the past two seasons. The Nationals have had a history of opposition to several teams such as the Baltimore Orioles. However, this is one of three teams that have yet to play in a World Series or won a national championship. However, they have won division championships such as the 1981 National League Championship, when the Nationals were still called the Montreal Expos.
The Nationals look familiar to many Washington fans because of their typical red, white, and blue uniforms that were worn by many teams that played in that area. These colors were picked to symbolize patriotism and the national American pastime. Other familiar elements of the team include their mascot, which is a Nationals-cap-and-jersey-wearing eagle chick named Screech. The Nationals are often referred to colloquially as the Nats.
The team's games are broadcast over TV and radio. On the radio, they can be heard on WFED "Federal News Radio." The frequencies are 1500 and 820 AM. On television, the games are broadcast over the Mid-Atlantic Sports network.
The team owner of the Washington Nationals is Ted Lerner. The team president, Stan Kasten, has a great deal of previous leadership experience with MLB teams, having managed and worked with the Atlanta Braves during their run of 14 National League championships. Kasten also worked with other sports teams in Atlanta. Part of his plan to rework the Nationals was to rebuild the whole team by focusing on long-term picks. He prefers to focus on draft picks as well as the farm system in which new talent is cultivated directly by the team.
Although over the past few regular seasons the Nationals appear to be winning fewer of their games, they have not given up and intend to come from behind to take the next National Championship and even possibly go to a World Series. With a strong roster consisting of the likes of Steven Shell on their pitching staff, they are sure to be able to bring the Nationals to win more of their games. Shell's ERA has decreased over his past few playing seasons, which implies that he's adjusting to his playing style and learning to pace himself with the game. This right-handed pitcher has one of the lowest ERAs in modern baseball, at less than 3 earned runs per game. He was drafted to the league directly from high school when the MLB recognized his talents. During his career with the Nationals, Shell has shown his ability to hold up under pressure, managing to hold the Houston Astros scoreless for three innings in one game, thus setting the team record for the longest save.
With talent like him on the team, the Washington Nationals are sure to go far in coming seasons. Washington Nationals tickets are sure to be a hot item this coming MLB season. They can be found on the official Washington Nationals Washington, DC website, and they usually are purchased in advance. Season tickets for the team are available as well, so it's easy to be able to go to any home game. The new Nationals Park stadium is sure to have a capacity crowd through upcoming seasons.
