However, one team that has always stayed close in the minds of hockey enthusiasts is the St. Louis Blues. The St. Louis Blues have quite a rich history in the world of hockey in North America. The team currently plays in the National Hockey league in the Central Division of the Western Conference, playing their home games in the Scottrade Center located in downtown St. Louis that holds approximately 19,150. However the team has only played there since 1994. Previously they played their home games in the St. Louis Arena. Originally, the team was accepted into the National Hockey League as an expansion team and during that agreement the team was forced to buy the St. Louis Arena from the St. Louis Eagles as a condition of the expansion deal. In 1967, the National Hockey League decided to introduce an expansion of the league that introduced six new teams, including the St. Louis Blues. The other teams included the Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and California Seals. They remain one of three teams out of the six accepted in the expansion that are yet to have won a Stanley Cup, however this doesn't mean that the franchise has not been able to have a great impact on the league and the minds of sports fans. The Blues originally go off to a pretty great start during the remainder of the 60s, however the success would not continue into the 70s when the Blues would start to experience some struggling. During the 1970s there were many changes that would make the Blues come into hard times. The first major change that affected the team greatly was the playoff format change as well as the fact that the experienced Chicago Blackhawks entering the Western Division, which was still very young talent, wise. This is also followed by the Blues losing Bowman following a dispute with different members of the organization, which saw him go to Montreal. This would be the start of rocky roads during the 70s for the St. Louis Blues. The team missed the playoffs for the first time during the 1973-74 season. There were also many different things that would play a role in the tough times during the 70s including the franchise experiencing extreme financial problems that would almost spell the collapse of the franchise. Although the franchise would experience these tough times, they would eventually make it through and go on to have a long successful career as a franchise within the National Hockey League. The fact that the franchise has been able to make it through the ups and downs and remain one of the most respected teams in the league is proof enough why the St. Louis Blues are one of the most respected teams in National Hockey League history. |
