Event Date: Fri, Jun 11, 2010 @ 1:00 PM Event Location: Jobing.com Arena (Glendale) Information about the Phoenix CoyotesThere are many different professional hockey teams that have had a rich history in hockey throughout the years, one of the those teams is undeniably the Phoenix Coyotes who are currently playing in the National Hockey League in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference while playing their home games in the Jobing.com Arena. However for those of you that are fans of the Coyotes and are unaware of the history behind the franchise, you may be quite surprised at just how far the team has come since their humble beginnings. The franchise was originally not part of the National Hockey League and was actually formed as a team for the World Hockey Association, which was the other prominent professional hockey league at the time. Another thing that fans of the Coyotes may find surprising is the fact that they were actually not named the Coyotes originally nor were they located in Phoenix. In actuality, franchise was formed in Winnipeg and known as the Winnipeg Jets who had a short career in the World Hockey Association before the league would eventually merge with the National Hockey League. During the merger there were many teams form the World Hockey Association that were accepted into the new league and the Jets were one them. There were many successes that the franchise would experience in the early days of the National Hockey League, however the majority of that time was spent developing the franchise into what it is today. However there were a few key things that would happen with the Jets that would eventually allow for the move to Phoenix as well as the name change. The first major reason for the move was the fact that the salaries for players began to quickly rise in the early 1990s. This would result in tough financial times for many Canadian teams like Winnipeg who were not in a position where the market could support the rising salaries. The Winnipeg Arena where the Jets played was also one of the smallest in the league, which would also contribute to financial problems. There were many people that fought to try and keep the team in Winnipeg however eventually the team would be moved to Phoenix. There was a contest held to rename the team that eventually resulted in the team being renamed to the Coyotes after the move. There are many different reasons why the Phoenix Coyotes as we know them today have received much attention lately. One of the main reasons is the addition of Wayne Gretzky as co owner and head coach of the team, which allowed the team to receive much exposure in a short period of time. Many hockey fans and experts within the community mark the Coyotes as being a team to watch out for in coming years as they are steadily starting to strengthen their talent and refine the franchise even further. |
