Information about the Columbus Blue Jackets

Many sports teams that have a long history within the world of sports often get a lot of coverage, however there are not as many people that are familiar with some of the newer franchises that are just starting to make and impact and cement their place within their sport. This is why we have put together some great information on one franchise that may be new to the National Hockey League, but is one the path to building a team and franchise that can rival any of the others. That franchise is the Columbus Blue Jackets.

There are many teams in the National Hockey League that have been around for well over 60 years and have created a legacy around their franchise. However there are some teams, like the Columbus Blue Jacket, who are still in the early stages of developing their organization but have been able to make great strides in a short amount of time.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have only been a professional franchise in the National Hockey League since 2000 and were founded as an expansion team. Although they have never qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they have been able to place third in their division beating out much more experienced teams. There are many different factors that have played into the Blue Jacket's ability to excel as a franchise in such a short amount of time. One of the biggest factors is that they have been able to acquire many star players that have greatly contributed to the developing of the team. Some of the most notable players that have worn the Columbus jersey at one point or another include David Vybomy, Ray Whitney, Geoff Sanderson, Fredrik Modin, Rich Nash, and Sergei Fedorov. These extremely prominent National Hockey League players have help the Columbus Blue Jackets establish themselves as competitors among the more experienced franchises in the league.

Opening the same year the team was founded, the team plays the majority of their home games at Nationwide Arena located in downtown Columbus. Current general manager Scott Howson plays a major role in the success of the franchise as well as head coach Ken Hitchcock who has coached the team since late 2006.

One of the things that have helped the team establish themselves as a recognizable team and household name is the fact that they have put much effort into the marketing of the team as a brand. The name Blue Jackets was chosen in relation to the Civil War and the history of patriotism in Ohio and the city of Columbus. The logo of the team also represents these roots. As a sign of this patriotism and roots in civil war, the franchise brought a replica cannon into the Nationwide Arena in order to fire it as a sign of celebration. Usually the cannon is fired when the Blue Jackets are doing well, for example it is fired when they score a goal or win the game.
