Information about the Washington Redskins

As the second most valuable football franchise in the NFL, the Washington Redskins are certainly a team to watch. While Washington Redskins tickets can be steep, Redskins tickets grant spectators access to one of the most dynamic teams in the league today. Located in Landover, Maryland, the Redskins have played in eleven championship games and they have won five, leading to five Super Bowl chances and three wins. Needless to say, stadium attendance has broken records.

Starting in the National Football League, the Washington Redskins were in the Eastern Division originally before moving into the American Conference, then the Eastern Conference and Capitol Division before settling in the NFC East. The Redskins are also one of only two NFL teams to have an actually marching band at their games.

The Washington Redskins started out as the Boston Football Braves in 1932 after the dismantling of the Newark Tornadoes. And while the Braves wanted to be a part of the New York territory, it was not allowed due to the NFL territorial rule. At the time, the team completed their first season with four wins, four losses and one tie. Once the Washington Redskins moved into Fenway Park in 1933, the team's name changed to the Redskins. The head coach was Lone Star Dietz and their record improved to five wins, five losses, and two ties. They continued their .500 average for another year before a new coach, Eddie Casey, began, leaving them with a horrible record... and another coach change. Ray Flaherty helped the team come back and win the Eastern Division that year. But even with a great record, low attendance forced the team to move to Washington the following season.

Sammy Baugh was a quarterback the Washington Redskins signed in 1937. This player was able to use the forward pass as a way to easily gain yards. And Baugh's experience in numerous positions made him an asset on the field. He led the team to a number of championship victories during the 1930s and 1940s. But this victorious time was short lived as the Washington Redskins only had three winning seasons between 1946 and 1968.

The integration of the Washington Redskins would to be difficult at first, but beneficial to the starting line. And the addition of Vince Lombardi in 1969 led to the Redskins revival. The last time the Washington Redskins made it to a Super Bowl was in 1992, winning against the Buffalo Bills. While the team's last appearance in a championship game was in 2007, it seems the team is ready for success with the current head coach Jim Zorn and a strong offensive line in place.

Originally known as the Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, the Washington Redskins currently play their games in the FedExField, located at 1600 FedEx Way, Landover, Maryland. This field opened in 1997 and holds up to 91,704 spectators. The stadium was originally named for the deceased owner of the Washington Redskins until the FedEx Corporation bought the rights to the name.
