Information about the Indianapolis Colts

The chain of events has unfolded after Colts Coach Tony Dungy retired. Ron Meeks, Defensive Coordinator resigned after seven seasons, eight days after Coach Dungy retired. Things are moving fast now, one day after quitting the Indianapolis Colts announced that Larry Coyer would be their choice, coming from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he was an assistant head coach. He had also been on a successful run as Defensive Coordinator at the Denver Broncos previously.

His stats at Denver were impressive, being ranked in the top 4 defenses under Coyer in 2003 and 2004, as the rankings on yards allowed. Another impressive stat for Coyer was the scoring defense number, giving them a 6th place rank during the four years he was at the Broncos.

With 44 years of coaching experience spanning both college and the pros, Coyer had college stops at Ohio State, Iowa, Pitt, and UCLA among others.

There is speculation that Meeks chose to quit rather then be fired, an option often given to coaches on the outs with a changing team management scenario. Meeks had been with the Colts since 2002 when Dungy hired him.

In 2007 he Colts led the NFL in scoring defense but were eliminated last year from the AFC playoffs by San Diego in the first round after dropping to seventh last season.

Meeks, 54 now, began in the NFL as a defensive assistant coach at Dallas in 1991 and went on to coach with Cincinnati, Atlanta, Washington and the Rams.

The succession plan for Dungy was put in place last year when Jim Caldwell was made Dungy's associate head coach. With his history serving only two years in that position after raising the Lombardi Trophy as the first black coach to do so, a long 31 year NFL career ends, having won a Super Bowl ring along the way as a player in Pittsburgh, he made many inroads along the way.

It's been a quick exit, telling the team owner Jim Isray on Sunday and on Monday morning telling the team of his decision. Dungy and his wife had spent the last five years deciding on him leaving coaching, so it wasn't a rushed decision.

The driving force behind the decision seems to be his desire to stay home and work in the community. His goals to make the country better along with more family time are admirable even if he doesn't know exactly how to accomplish that lofty goal.

Dungy eased the road for other blacks into head coaching positions with many examples now. He also had some impressive league records along the way. Some of them are:
Most consecutive playoff seasons (10);
Consecutive 12-win seasons (six); and
Leaves with the highest average number of regular-season victories of any coach in league history (10.7).

Dungy was known for his ties to family, faith and football, maybe in equal amounts, but nevertheless, a combination slanted toward service.

Dungy is leaving after getting a new stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium, that was a jewel for their own personal hometown stadium with a new high-tech retractable roof. Their Colts tickets sales were set at 63,000 for football and when the Super Bowl comes in 2012, seating can go to 70,000 allowing the Indianapolis Colts tickets sales to be adjusted possibly bringing in that additional revenue at some point.
