One team that has quite a rich history in North American Sports and especially in American basketball is the Washington Wizards. Most basketball fans and many overall sports fans know of the incredible history of this great franchise, however many of the younger fans do not realize that the Washington Wizards were not always the team as you know them today. In fact that the team has gone through many ups and downs before finally becoming the Washington Wizards. Below you will find some great information about the fascinating history of the Washington Wizards. During the early years of the franchise the team was actually not known as the Wizards nor did they play in Washington. When the franchise was first formed they played the 1961-62 season as the Chicago Packers. However this would not be the last name before becoming the Wizards and moving to Washington. The following year the Packers would change their names to the Zephyrs only to be moved to Baltimore in 1963 and renamed to the Baltimore Bullets. The franchise would go on to keep the name the Baltimore Bullets for several years with many successes including drafting hall of famers Wes Unseld and Earl Monroe. It wasn't until 1973 that the franchise would relocate to Landover, Maryland and rename the team to the Capital Bullets. The year following the move the team would eventually change their name to the Washington Bullets. The Bullets would go on to have many great success within the National Basketball Association for many years before becoming the team that you know them as today. Eventually the owner Abe Pollin renamed the team in 1995 to the Wizards. The reasons for the name change were not under normal basketball circumstances such as a team being relocated. Instead the name change was provoked by the fact the name the bullets had started to garner some intention with its violent overtones in relation to gun crime in Washington. In order to avoid the negative connotations of the name Abe Pollin decided to rename the team to the Wizards. However there were many different names that were chosen as part of a contest before settling on the Wizards. Some of the names that were considered include the Express, Sea Dogs, Stallions, and Dragons. Although most people were happy with the Wizards being the new name for the franchise, there was also much controversy early on due to the fact that "Wizard" is a rank for members of the Klu Klux Klan. However the controversy was thought to be largely unfounded and something that was just brought up by people disappointed with the change. These changes are part of a huge effort to rebrand the franchise that caused the team to become the Washington Wizards that basketball fans known and love today. |
