Information about the Philadelphia 76ers


There are a ton of different franchises in the history of sports in North America that have been able to create a legacy that will be remember in sports for generations to come. This is no exceptions for many different franchises in basketball, most of which currently or once played in either the American Basketball Association or the National Basketball Association. One franchise that is definitely one that will be remembered for quite a long time to come among basketball fans and sports enthusiasts of all kinds is the Philadelphia 76ers. There are many different factors that play into the incredibly rich history that surrounds the Philadelphia 76ers and their great reputation in North American sports.

The team is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and currently plays in the National Basketball Association. However the team was not always the same team as many fans know and love today. For instance, the team is actually the oldest franchise in NBA history. The franchise actually did not have its beginnings in Philadelphia. In fact the teams roots are in Syracuse where they played in the National Basketball League as the Syracuse Nationals. The team was founded as the Syracuse Nationals in 1946 when Danny Biasone sent $5000 to the National Basketball League. It wasn't until 1949 during the merger of the National Basketball League with the Basketball Association of American that the franchise would become one of the NBL franchises to be part of what would become the National Basketball Association after the merger. The first championship in the NBA for the franchise was in 1955 when they were still the Syracuse Nationals.

There are many people that do not realize the fact that the Philadelphia 76ers were in fact the Syracuse Nationals for a large part of their early history. It wasn't until the Nationals started to experience a little bit of struggling for several different reasons that the franchise was eventually sold to paper magnate Irv Kosloff and moved by Kosloff to Philadelphia in 1963. Although there were many different reasons that the owner of the Nationals, Danny Biasone was experiencing troubles making the team profitable, one of the major factors that is considered to be a big reason for selling the team is the fact that Syracuse was not a big enough city and market for a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association to be profitable.

There are many different things that have contributed to the incredible reputation that the Philadelphia 76ers have. Arguably the biggest thing that led the team to such notable popularity is some of the star players that team were able to acquire over the years and have success with. One of these players is the legendary Wilt Chamberlain who was acquired from the Warriors and went on to contribute to the great reputation of the Philadelphia 76ers and is often brought up when the 76ers history is. These are just a few of the reasons that the Philadelphia 76ers will remain one of the teams with the richest history in Basketball for quite a long time to come.
