The Boston Celtics are a professional basketball team in the Eastern Conference and the Atlantic Division of the National Basketball Association. The team was founded in 1946 and is owned by Wycliffe Grousbeck and currently coached by Doc Rivers or Glen "Doc" River as well as Danny Ainge acting as President of Basketball Operations for the team. The team has had a few different home arenas over the years. Their current home arena is the TD Banknorth Garden. Some of the past arenas that were home to the Boston Celtics include the Boston Arena, the Hartford Civic Center, and the Boston Garden. There are many different reasons why the Boston Celtics are sometimes considered to have a much more notable legacy within the NBA than a lot of other teams. One of the biggest reasons for their incredible reputation is the fact that they have won 17 NBA Championships. This is the most NBA championship for any one franchise in the history of the National Basketball Association. This alone is one of the most notable explanations for the Boston Celtics incredible reputation. Another way that the Boston Celtics have been able to create such a great legacy is due to the fact that they won eight straight titles in between 1959 and 1966 which was the longest winning streak in the history of the National Basketball Association for consecutive championship wins. In fact, this record of eight straight titles is also the longest consecutive winning streak among any professional North American sports team in history. One of the biggest factors in relation to the outstanding history and legacy of the Boston Celtics is the length of time throughout their history that they have been able to dominate the National Basketball Association. For example, for a large part of the playoffs during the 1950s and 1980s, the Boston Celtics were dominators within the league and made a huge impact on the fans and members of the basketball community. Although up until the 80s the Boston Celtics played a major role in the NBA, there were times where the franchise experienced a decline in success within the league. For instance, after the early 80s the team lost many of its top players and also suffered the death of its top draft pick and all-star player, Len Bias in 1986 and Reggie Lewis in 1993. After that point the team would only go on to make the playoffs four times within all of the seasons during 1996 to 2007. Although there were many years during that period when the team would experience many difficulties, the legendary franchise would eventually pull through and go on to win the 17th championship in 2008 against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals. |
